Moments to watch for

For guests attending a Kerala Syrian Christian wedding for the first time, a few of the moments that make the service so special.

The Crowning

A blessing for the couple

The bride and groom are crowned during the service, a sign of the blessing and honour of their new life together.

Minnu Kettu

Tying the minnu

The groom ties the minnu, a small gold pendant bearing a cross, around the bride’s neck. It hangs on a thread woven from seven strands drawn from the manthrakodi.

Manthrakodi

The blessed saree

The groom drapes the manthrakodi, the bridal saree given by his family, over the bride’s head. “Manthra” means blessed and “kodi” means new cloth.

Getting there

The church

Marthoman Church is one of Kerala’s historic churches, founded around 1100 AD. Mulanthuruthy is about 15 km south-east of Kochi city centre.

By air and rail

Cochin International Airport is about 32 km from the church. Mulanthuruthy railway station is the nearest stop, and Ernakulam Junction is about 15 km away.

To the reception

St. Francis Assisi Syro-Malabar Church sits at Amballoor Pallithazham junction on the Ernakulam to Thalayolaparambu road, a short drive south of Mulanthuruthy.
